Launch announcement: PrivateByRight VPN is live

min read

PrivateByRight VPN is live today. This is the product of months of engineering, testing, and refining a system designed around a single principle: privacy should be the default, not an upsell.

We built this because the VPN industry has a trust problem. Too many providers rely on vague logging policies, aggressive marketing, and absolute claims about "complete anonymity" that simply aren't true. We wanted a tool that is honest about what it can do, transparent about how it operates, and built to minimize data collection at every level.

Here is what we built, why we built it, and how it works.

What we built: A VPN designed for data minimisation

PrivateByRight VPN is a secure tunnel for your internet traffic. It encrypts your connection between your device and our servers, hiding your IP address from the websites you visit and protecting your data from local network snooping.

We focused on the features that actually matter for privacy and security, stripping away the bloat.

Core features at launch

  • No-logs architecture: We do not log your browsing history, connection timestamps, or IP addresses. Our systems are designed so that we simply do not have this data to hand over, even if asked. This architecture is built to be audited by independent third parties.
  • System-level kill switch: If your VPN connection drops, the kill switch immediately blocks all internet traffic. This prevents your real IP address from leaking accidentally. It is enabled by default.
  • WireGuard and OpenVPN: We support both major protocols. WireGuard is the default—it is fast, lean, and uses modern cryptography. OpenVPN is available as a reliable fallback for restrictive networks or older systems.
  • Private DNS: All your DNS requests are routed through the encrypted VPN tunnel and resolved by our own DNS servers. This prevents your internet service provider from seeing which websites you are trying to visit.
  • Split tunneling: You can choose which applications use the VPN tunnel and which connect directly to the internet. This is useful for accessing local network devices or services that block known VPN IP addresses.

Why we built it: The problem with the status quo

The standard model for many consumer VPNs involves collecting as much user data as legally permissible, often to sell to third-party advertisers or data brokers. Even paid services sometimes bury broad data collection clauses in their terms of service.

Furthermore, the marketing in this space is often misleading. A VPN does not make you anonymous. It does not stop website trackers, cookies, or browser fingerprinting. It is one layer of a privacy stack, not a magic bullet.

We built PrivateByRight to be different. We are honest about the limitations of a VPN. We do not make absolute claims. We believe that if you are paying for a privacy tool, the company providing it should not be monetizing your data on the side.

The impact model: Privacy with purpose

Privacy is a fundamental right, but it is increasingly under threat globally. We believe a privacy company should actively support the ecosystem that defends these rights.

That is why a portion of every PrivateByRight subscription directly funds organizations fighting for privacy, press freedom, and human rights. We do not just build tools; we support the people doing the hard work on the ground.

You can see exactly where these funds go and how we operate in our Transparency Hub. We publish regular reports detailing our impact, our infrastructure decisions, and any legal requests we receive.

What "privacy-first" actually means in practice

"Privacy-first" is a common marketing phrase. For us, it is an engineering requirement.

It means RAM-only servers wherever possible. When a server is rebooted, all data is wiped. There are no hard drives storing persistent logs.

It means default-on protection. You should not have to dig through advanced settings to make the app secure. The kill switch and private DNS are active the moment you install the app.

It means independent audits. Trust is earned, not given. We design our systems to be verifiable, and we commit to regular, public audits of our infrastructure and applications.

What is available today

Starting today, PrivateByRight VPN is available for download.

  • Supported platforms: Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
  • Protocols: WireGuard (default) and OpenVPN.
  • Server locations: We are launching with a curated list of high-performance servers in key regions, prioritizing stability and speed over sheer numbers.

What is coming next

Launch is just the beginning. We have a clear roadmap for the next 90 days and beyond. We are working on advanced anti-censorship features, broader platform support, and deeper integrations with other privacy tools.

You can read the full details of what we are building next in our Roadmap.

FAQs

Does PrivateByRight VPN make me completely anonymous?

No. A VPN encrypts your connection and hides your IP address from websites, but it does not make you anonymous. Websites can still track you using cookies, browser fingerprinting, or if you log into an account. A VPN is a crucial part of your privacy setup, but it is not the only tool you need.

Do you keep logs of my browsing activity?

No. We operate a strict no-logs architecture. We do not record your browsing history, the files you download, or your DNS queries. Our systems are designed to minimize data collection, and we use RAM-only servers where possible to ensure data is wiped upon reboot.

What happens if my VPN connection drops?

Our system-level kill switch immediately blocks all internet traffic if the VPN connection is lost. This ensures your real IP address and unencrypted data are not accidentally exposed to your internet service provider or local network.

Can I use PrivateByRight VPN on my phone?

Yes. We have dedicated apps for both iOS and Android, featuring the same core protections as our desktop applications, including WireGuard support and a built-in kill switch.

How does my subscription support human rights?

A portion of every subscription fee is allocated to our impact fund. This fund provides financial support to vetted organizations working on digital privacy, press freedom, and human rights advocacy. We detail these contributions in our Transparency Hub.

What is the difference between WireGuard and OpenVPN?

WireGuard is a newer protocol designed for high speed and modern security. It is our default choice. OpenVPN is an older, highly reliable protocol that is excellent at bypassing strict network firewalls. We offer both so you can choose the best option for your specific network environment.
